What does the GIS Office do?

We provide maps, geographic data, and spatial analysis to aid citizens, government officials, and others in visualizing, communicating, and making decisions that affect the county.

What is "GIS"?

GIS stands for "Geographic Information Systems" - a computer-based system designed to create, display, and analyze geographic features and other location-specific information.

The most visible use of GIS is computer-based map-making. But what really gives GIS power is its ability to manage, visualize, and analyze information in a database that is connected to the map. This allows a user to research information on specific locations or to map out locations with desired characteristics.

GIS is used in purposes such as 911 dispatch, mapping county land records, vehicle routing, asset management, infrastructure planning, and exploration of patterns in demography or biology.
